Gourmet Goes Tribal

Kolkata, the first stop of Pablo's journey and the gastronomical capital of India. Pablo explores the streets, local markets and meets a lot of exciting people who give him a taste of the regions cuisine.

The Monpa Tribe are the corn farmers who reside in this small, beautiful village of Dirang. The mountain slopes and the corn harvest remind Pablo of his home and the comfort food warm his soul.

Pablo steps foot in one of the most remote parts of the Arunachal Pradesh, the Lubrang Valley, which shelters the Brokpa Tribe and their yaks from the very unpredictable weather.

Tawang is synonymous with Buddhism with its magnificent monastery set among the Himalayas. Paul's journey takes him to meet with monks, pay respects at a centuries-old stupa and cook with nuns.

Pablo lands in the laid back village of Manipur to meet the king of the Thangkul Tribe. Later, he shares a meal and a jam session with a famous musician.

Darjeeling is famous for its tea gardens and toy trains. Pablo enjoys a proper English breakfast and is enlightened by the tea master.

Pablo learns how the Limbu Tribe went from hunters to farmers in Darap. Later, he meets the Marathon Man and cooks organic vegetables straight from the garden.

Pablo visits a hotel in Yuksom where the owner teaches him about Bhutia cooking. Then he finds a little piece of the Alps in India - a cheese factory specializing in gouda!

In Lehtang, Pablo meets a woman who makes organic wine in her kitchen.

Pablo is welcomed by the locals of Khweng. He learns about the centuries-old tradition of making silk from the cocoons of silkworms.

In Shillong, the Rock Capitol of India, Pablo meets D-Bok, a hip hop artist who flips burgers to fund his music career. They visit the cleanest village in Asia, Mawlyngong, where they enjoy a home cooked meal featuring jackfruit.

The small town of Jorhat in Assam has the largest number of tea gardens in the state. Pablos lands for the tea experience but leaves with a taste for duck stewed with Bhut Jolokia, also known as the ghost pepper.

Pablo visits the shrinking island of Majuli where the Mishing Tribe has built their houses on stilts, weaves their own clothing and brews beer made from rice.

Pablo is invited to join in the tribal festivities of the Tiwas.

The village of Medhaghat in Assam, home to the Bodo Tribe, is awash in festivities upon Pablo's arrival. He joins in the good times and learns about their harvest time traditions.

Pablo visits the 700-year-old village of the Angami Nagas where he gets a glimpse of their community culture and surprising transformation from fierce head-hunters to farmers.

Mokukchung is the cultural capital for the Ao Nagas. Pablo visits them during the Moatsumung Festival, a colorful, spirited festival that brings together all the Naga Community. Then, Pablo creates a dish that celebrates the different local cultures.

Human migration has led to the spread of fermentation in beverages across many parts of the world. Pablo learns about the fermentation practices in North East India brought by people from Tibet, Burma, Laos, and Vietnam.
