Castle Dux, Bohemia, 1798. Casanova, now a penniless librarian in his seventies, begins to tell Edith, a young kitchen maid in the castle he works in, his life story and how he fell in love with Henriette.

After the young Casanova breaks out of prison, he flees Venice in search of Venetian ambassadors abroad able to grant pardons and lives a life of debauchery in Europe.

In the present, Edith lies to the older Casanova, who is near death, telling him that he is wrong in thinking that Henrietta is dead, instead convincing him Henriette is on her way to see him.
