Fortunes of War

Guy takes Harriet on a tour of Bucharest and then to a dinner, where he introduces her to an assortment of locals and expatriates living and working in the city.

Harriet grows increasingly concerned about Guy"s involvement with a British intelligence agent and with the young woman he picks for the lead in "Troilus and Cressida."

The war is closing in on Bucharest, and the Pringles and their friends make plans to leave the city just as the first German troops begin to arrive.

The Pringles move to Athens, where they encounter some familiar faces from Bucharest. Guy organizes a show for the British soldiers in the city.

Athens falls to the Germans as the Pringles reach Cairo. Guy is forced to take a teaching post in Alexandria, and Harriet befriends a naïve young British army officer.

Young Simon Boulderstone is forced to quickly learn the realities of war. As Guy busies himself with his teaching duties, Harriet decides to return to England.

Mourning his wife, Guy realizes how lonely she must have been in recent months. Meanwhile, an oblivious Harriet attends an Easter service in Damascus.
