Dar befriends the inquisitive and bumbling Tao as he begins his quest to rescue his long-lost love, Kyra, who has been kidnapped and enslaved by brutal Terron warriors.

Dar works together with Akili, a warrior banished by the Terrons, to rescue Kyra.

With the help of his animal friends, Dar rescues Tao from an island inhabited by the murderous Birdmen.

Kyra manages to escape from Zad and the Terron camp and briefly reunites with Dar, but the Sorceress has other plans for the couple.

While Tao is introducing Dar to the finer points of mapmaking, Garuda, a golden phoenix in the guise of a man, begins to stalk the unsuspecting duo.

Such terror strikes the Mydlands that even Terrons are running scared. Dar finds the skeletal remains of two fallen Terrons killed by arrows and poisonous vines.

Dissension in the Terron ranks finally comes to the fore and enmeshes Dar and Tao.

The Ancient One visits the sleeping Sorceress and brings her spirit with him to Dar's camp, where he reveals to the two spirits a taste of things to come.
