Natural river landscapes have almost completely disap-peared in Europe: The major rivers have almost all been transformed into channelled waterways. It is extremely rare to find a union comprising of a river, flooding area and cultivated land, as is the case with the huge Save flood-plains of Croatia, where meadows and pastures of around 100.000 hectares have survived the destruction.
