Percival and Nellie go to New York so that Percival can run the family business now that his father has died. Saddened by Nellie's departure, the Olesons decide to adopt a girl to take the place of Nellie

The Oleson's new daughter, Nancy, turns out to be worse than Nellie ever was, even locking another girl in the ice house. The students decide to teach Nancy a lesson. Meanwhile, Adam and Mary move to New York, and Hester-Sue comes to Walnut Grove

Charles and Caroline are struggling to raise five children in their small home. Meanwhile, James is trying to be more like Albert, even copying the way Albert shaves. But when he breaks Albert's razor, trouble starts brewing…and James runs away.

Doc Baker posts an ad for help. Disappointed when a black doctor answers the ad, Doc Baker only gives the black doctor a few minor cases. However, the Doc soon realizes the new doctor's skill level after he saves a pregnant mother and her child.

Eliza Jane invites Laura to attend a "Great American Writers" seminar in Arizona. While traveling, the girls meet a man, Mort, who is also traveling to the seminar. Mort develops feelings for Eliza Jane, but she has fallen for the class's professor.

Gambini an escape artist, stops by Walnut Grove. Albert quickly takes interest in what Gambini does. He decides to neglect his schoolwork to practice Gambini's stunts. However, he changes his mind after Gambini unexpectedly dies while doing a stunt.

Nels is kidnapped by two crooks who try to get Mrs. Oleson to pay ransom for her husband. Mrs. Oleson, however, refuses, which upsets Mr. Oleson. Luckily the kidnappers aren't very skilled and may end up having to choose another line of work.

Mr. Edwards adopted son is killed, putting him in a deep depression. Charles tries to comfort Mr. Edwards through this difficult period. But a chance encounter with a stolen watch makes them believe that the Mr. Edwards' son did not die accidently.

Elmer Miles, an overweight boy, comes to attend school in Walnut Grove and is immediately picked on by his peers because of his weight. The teasing turns so vicious that Elmer decides it is better to quit school rather than face down the bullies.

Mrs. Oleson changes the restaurant into a franchise but has a hard time living up to the business agreements. Meanwhile, Charles and Nels get together and decide to open up a restaurant of their own, right across the street from Harriet's!

Mary, Adam, Hester-Sue, the Wilders, and the Ingalls are all together for Christmas. The snow begins falling so hard that they are snowed in by a blizzard. To pass the time, several of them tell stories and reminisce about Christmases past.

The new kid in school, Gideon, has a speech problem. James has befriended Gideon, but he and the other school children make fun of him. Devastated, Gideon runs away from home. Caroline eventually finds Gideon and takes him back home.

Charles Ingalls and Almanzo leave a pregnant Laura for a short while to go on a business trip. As a severely damaging drought continues, Laura tries to save the crops by watering and she suffers heat stroke which endangers the un-born baby.

While Albert takes care of the farm, Charles makes takes on a new career making tables. But when someone steals his designs and starts mass producing the tables, Charles gets very upset but also learns a life lesson about family from the ordeal.

Uncle Jed, a relative of James and Cassandra, lavishes the children with gifts after he strikes gold. But when he files a lawsuit against Charles (Michael Landon) to get custody of the kids, the Ingalls fear they will lose the children forever.

Hester-Sue's ex-husband, Sam, comes back to Walnut Grove to win her back. He convinces her that he's quit gambling and drinking, and Hester-Sue (Ketty Lester) agrees to marry him. Then, Sam's current wife and kids show up with another story.

Almanzo suffers a stroke when he goes back to work too quickly after his illness. As a result, he ends up partially paralyzed. Even after Laura has her child, Almanzo's depression only deepens, changing their life together. (Part 1 of 2)

Things keep getting worse when a twister comes by and destroys the Wilder's home. Almanzo (Dean Butler) finally decides to shake off the depression caused by the stroke and learn to walk again so that he can rebuild their homestead. (Part 2 of 2)

Mr. Edwards begins drinking again because he can't get over the grief of his son's death. His wife asks him to leave, so he returns to Walnut Grove. Charles allows Albert to go along with Mr. Edwards to Sleepy Eye to pick up some goods.

A friend of Caroline's writes asking for help. Her friend is pregnant and lives at a gold prospector's camp where there is an outbreak of flu. Caroline finds out that her friend's husband doesn't like his wife, even willing his unborn baby to die.

James joins Charles, Albert and Mr. Edwards as they travel to Sleepy Eye for a delivery. James gets shot during a bank robbery and lapses into a coma. The doctor tells Charles that it is likely he will die. (Part 1 of 2)

James is still comatose from the gunshot wounds he suffered. Charles is convinced that James will recover, even though everyone else has told him there is no hope. An embittered Charles begins to take out his grief on his family and friends.
