17. While the eastern provinces were at theological odds with Constantinople, a new military and theological threat arose, Islam. Islam drew disaffected Christians who preferred life under Islam to persecution from Constantinople, and the Empire saw the loss of half its lands to the new faith. But Islam's initial tolerance soon faded and Christians found life difficult under hostile Muslim rulers.
