Davina and husband Al settle into a modern downtown loft, but their new life proves to be as uncomfortable as the formless couch that is their sole piece of furniture.

Davina and Al are reminded of their pasts by chance encounters with old friends. As Al tries to assert himself, Davina has a disturbing visit with her comatose mother.

While Al battles to find his place amongst the literary elite, Davina is tempted by the suave and sophisticated Robert Ringwald.

Leather-clad piano teacher/amateur archeologist Greg enters their lives. While Al practices his scales, Davina accepts Greg’s invitation to peruse his discoveries.

Davina’s mother dies, and Roger is reborn. Al gets high and questions Davina’s loyalty.

Davina makes some major changes, but will she regret her decision? Roger’s art show is a smashing success and, suddenly, Al’s hypochondria seems entirely reasonable.
