After Linus’ first close encounter with a buffalo herd with at least one good bull, after a long stalk, part of it on hands and knees, he had to realize that he was not fast enough on the trigger. The bull was broadside in a very favourable position, but once you expose yourself to the many watchful eyes in the herd, you have very little time to find your target and squeeze off the shot. kwglobal

Jonas is after a buffalo again. The trackers have found a new herd and now the hunters must use the cover and the wind to their advantage in order to get within shooting range. They move rapidly forward but try to present as low a profile as possible. When the animals become aware of the movements of the hunters, Peter tries to calm them by uttering his buffalo call.

Jonas is hunting buffalo again. The stalk is on, but it is difficult to see the animals in the dense vegetation. The trackers, however, know their trade, and expertly guide the group, following what appears to Jonas to be invisible tracks. These guys really are masters of their environment. There is not much wind and the temperature is rising steadily.

Jonas got his fine Lichtenstein’s hartebeest bull after a long and difficult stalk. Another exciting hunt in the Selous Game Reserve has ended. For the two hunters on their first East African Safari it has been an adventurous day with lots of animal sightings. Eventually, they got both a hyena and a hartebeest in the bag.

It has been a fantastic day of hunting for Linus in the Selous, maybe his best ever. He has experienced some exciting moments during the hunt and some memorable encounters with the fantastic wildlife of the reserve. In the years to come, a look at his trophies will immediately take him back to Africa in his mind.

To Peter Dafner, the wild life is the key to success for all safaris. An area may have a low density or a high density depending on the season and the species you are after. These days, safaris are often limited by the time the client is willing to invest. Depending on what your target species are, the client may be disappointed because he expects too much and there is not enough time to get it.

As an experienced hunter, Poul knows the importance of checking his weapon making slight adjustment to the scope of his .416 Rigby caliber rifle. PH Ryan Shallom is deeply fascinated with the open sighted Scheiring .470 double rifle that Torben is going to use on the hunt.

The old bull that Ryan has identified as a shootable trophy, is lying peacefully, facing away from the hunters. Now that they agree on which bull to focus on, they inch closer step by step and ever so slowly, keeping an eye on the buffalo.

The trackers Juma and Maulidi eventually are able to convince Peter, that there is still a chance to get close to the buffalo. Peter has succeeded in getting the attention of the buffaloes by calling. There are plenty of buffalo. The shot was good; the bull is definitely hit, but he disappears with the rest of the herd before Martin can put in his second shot.

Torben on the other hand will get his patience and shooting skills tested to the limit. The tracker Seti has seen a dagga boy and he has a plan for approaching it. Often, you have the chance to get quite close to these old buffaloes.

The plane lands and four new hunters have arrived at Selous. Torben, Poul, Henrik and Martin and their wife meet their PHs for the first time. Luggage and supplies are taken off the plane and it is ensured that everything is as it should be. Linus and Jonas board start the first stage towards Sweden.

The first morning Peter suggests that they take a walk along the Kilombero River. It has been an exciting and adventurous first day of hunting for Martin and Henrik in the unique Selous Game Reserve of Tanzania. Martin got his first African trophy, a beautiful mature waterbuck, and Henrik experienced the surge of adrenaline, when he got very close to buffalo on a couple of occasions.

Martin is satisfied with Peter’s explanation for why they start controlled bushfires. That also explains why the trackers from time to time throw burning matches into the grass as they go along. Everyone lends a hand in loading the heavy bull onto the car. Now it is time to enjoy a cold Kilimanjaro beer. Mission accomplished.

Martin got his buffalo bull, but a large part of the credit for the successful hunt should go to the two trackers, Juma and Maulidi. The party does not get home in time for a sundowner. The campfire dies out, only leaving the many memories of an adventurous day.

Henrik is a very passionate angler, and he is not letting a chance to dip the hook pass by. Henrik did not get his wildebeest bull today. Not a single piece of game was bagged, but the day offered some very exciting hunting situations and memorable experiences for all. For everyone in the group, seeing the wild dogs in their natural habitat was a highlight.

Following a wounded buffalo in dense vegetation can rapidly change from an exciting undertaking to a dangerous one, if you do not take your precautions. Peter takes the responsibility for the safety of his client seriously, so whenever the vegetation gets too thick, he moves forward alone with the trackers to secure the area.

Martin has promised his wife Laila to bring a zebra skin back home, but so far, chances have been few and attempts unsuccessful. Will he succeed this time? They are a long way away from camp and the afternoon heat is intense, so the zebra will have to be skinned in the field. It would be a pity for Martin if his nice trophy should go bad, after all that he had to go through to get it.

The adventure in the Selous ends where it all began; at a dusty airstrip out in the wilderness. Now new friendships have been formed during the past days, where PH’s, hunters and their wives have lived close together in camp and shared intense moments and wonderful experiences in the bush. A final glimpse of the Kilombero River marks the farewell to the Selous.
