Blake and his crew witness an explosion that destroys their spaceship, The Liberator. The event is shown to them by the super-computer Orac, who refuses to say when it will happen.

The Terra Nostra are a dangerous crime syndicate which Blake discovers while trying to buy their help, but they are not as dangerous as the mysterious force which threatens Cally.

Something very secret and dangerous is stolen from the Weapons Development Base of the Federation. Blake sets out to find it before Servalan's security forces close in.

Blake takes the Liberator towards the edge of the galaxy while fleeing ship patrols, but on a planet named Horizon he is finally captured by the Federation.
