Sonny is a Park Ranger. After an accident involving a dangerous helicopter rescue, he is sent to work in the city. He and his twin children Jerry and Lou are unhappy at being cut off from the bush and most of all from their kangaroo Skippy.

Lou and Skippy find animal traps in the National Park near Habitat. Somebody is living in the park, and that’s not allowed. But Lou’s anger turns to sympathy when she meets him, 13 year-old Jim, who has been unhappy on his parents’ farm.

Kate’s grandfather Bill is a greenie who runs a small farm up river from Habitat. He’s a lovable old man, and when some fish die in the river near his place, he stages a one-man demonstration at the local paper mill, for polluting the river.

Glen is a boy who wants to be a stuntman. But Glen’s got it all wrong. He’s overweight, and is only using his limited knowledge of stunting (falling on cardboard boxes) to draw attention to himself. Then Glen discovers he has a real talent.

On a dare, Jerry sneaks into a bush tree house where there lives a man who is mad at today’s modern civilisation. He’s guarding a colony of koalas and has let the stories about him spread in order to protect his beloved furry friends.

The twins are baffled by a new girl who moves into the neighbourhood. Why does she always stay at home? And why is she forbidden to visit Habitat? It’s because she is in a wheelchair, the result of a tragic accident in which her mother was killed.

Jerry is fired up with enthusiasm for cross country running, and he is disappointed when his chief rival Brendan cheats in a race and Jerry loses. Meanwhile, Easter is approaching, and an egg hunt is organized at Habitat for the local littlies.

The Pirates are a boys’ gang, they won’t let Jerry in, he forms his own gang, the Buccaneers. Meanwhile, the realizes that the Pirates’ noisy activity is driving animals away from a waterhole in the National Park. The boys have got to be stopped.

A balloon is at Habitat as a tourist attraction, the Hammonds have guests, Lou’s friend Tamiko and a Japanese boy who is staying with Tamiko’s family.

Jerry is saving money for a bike. When vandals attack a primary school, he stakes out a school in the hope of collecting the reward money. Instead of catching the vandals, he scares them off when they could have been nabbed by a security guard.

A balloon is tethered at Habitat as a tourist attraction, the Hammonds have guests - Lou’s friend Tamiko and a Japanese boy who is staying with Tamiko’s family. The Japanese boy is discovered to be the heir to the great Nakamura electronics family.

The Roos are Jerry’s soccer team. Kate is their trainer, Skippy is their mascot, and Lou videos their games for discussion after practice. In mid season, however, Thel and Sonny, the supports of all this activity, are laid low with flu.
