The Best Of The Carol Burnett Show

Lana Turner sings and dances through Heavenly Music, in a major production number. Gorshin croons a little I Love You, You Love Me. Carol plays Julia Wild, a serious oenophile preparing coq au vin. Then she dons scuba gear for a duet with Gorshin.

Garry Moore, Durward Kirby and Carol Burnett performing together means physical comedy wrapped in a warm blanket of nostalgia. Vicki Lawrence and Lyle Waggoner share a rare duo. Carol honors lead dancer Don Crichton with his own showcase.

Satire abounds in this episode with Carol, Harvey, and Vicki's take on a first family's "Fireside Chat," The Three Little Pigs opera, and Lyle Waggoner (and Bob Hope!) as Hugh Handsome.

Four-time Tony winner Gwen Verdon demonstrates why she won all those awards. Harvey and Carol's beloved "The Old Folks" sketch finds them engaging in a kind of geriatric Apache dance. Pat Boone provides a magical moment singing Biff Rose's Molly.

Carol as "Alice Portnoy" is the preteen from hell, blackmailing her teacher (Harvey) so he'll upgrade her from an F to an A. Her longtime friend Joyce (Nanette Fabray) confesses to being a kleptomaniac.

There's a definite peace-love vibe to this episode. George Carlin parodies The Tonight Show with J. Edgar Hoover replacing Johhny Carson. Carol and Lucille Ball play rival BWA stewardesses eager to please Harvey Korman as a Castro-lookalike hijacker.

Ken Berry's singing-tapping rendition of Mr. Bojangles is a classy highlight, and later he joins Carol and Nanette in a post-Civil War era love triangle sketch in which his self-effacing geniality illustrates how he made himself a TV icon.

In this Thanksgiving show, Paul Lynde plays it straight (shall we say) until Carol gets things back on track by dropping the turkey and fixings. Golden Globe winner Dylan Cannon delivers a beautiful rendition of Until It's Time for You to Go.

Carol and Vicki play brazen star stalkers at the Brown Derby, to the chagrin of guest Rita Hayworth. Carol and Rita deliver a version of Mutual Admiration Society, before Rita steps into Carol's boots to take on the Charwoman character.

Clayton Moore, as The Lone Ranger, was a no-nonsense guy. Tim Conway in the same role is a pure nonsense guy. Pat Carroll visits the Bradford family and wears out her welcome in record time.

Bernadette Peters and Mike Douglas guest star. Bernadette dances to Tea for Two, Douglas joins Carol for a medley of hits, the Ham Actors battle the elements, and the whole gang unites in Broadway, My Street.

The fourth season's final show finds the fab four cast regulars (plus guests Paul Lynde and Nanette Fabray) playing together in almost every sketch as a tight-knit ensemble. Funny, yes-but abundantly life affirming too. Classic Carol.

Guest Stars Diahann Carroll and Tim Conway. Carroll delivers a strong version of Leon Russell's A Song for You. As not-so-swinging singles, Conway and Burnett browse at a furniture store. Someone should have notified the water bed in advance.
