Joe Barrett (Humphrey Bogart) believes his wife died in a Japanese concentration camp. When he returns to Japan, he discovers she is alive and married to a lawyer. Bogart tracks her down and discovers she is raising their 7-year-old daughter. He becomes determined to win back his ex-wife's love but dies in an attempt to save her and their child.
