Calum Buchanan joins the practice along with his tame badger, Marilyn. Pregnant ewes, the plumbing at Sceldale and Helen's engagement ring all welcome the arrival of the new vetarainian.

Trisitan has been appointed as a fertility counselor for the Ministry of Agriculture. He and James are sent to Grimbsby to examine an export consignment of sheep with two Russian vets. The female Russian vet reaffirms Tristan's stero-typical beliefs about Russian women.

James has a crisis of professional confidence while treating a cow with a new drug. Tristan tries to convince a local farmer of the virtues of artifical insemination but Siegfried only succeeds in engaging the farmer's bull

James has his eye on a prospective piece of property recently put on the market with the idea he could surprise Helen by purchasing it. Unknown to him, however, Helen has bigger ideas. There is trouble from a local farmer, which ironically leads Callum to celebrate his departure from the Herriot household.

The Harriots give highland dancing a fling while Siegfried has fleas. Meanwhile, the disapearance of a stag suggeests there are threatening poachers nearby.

James and Siegfreid deal with a sheepdog trainer whose dog is suffering from epilepsy. At Skeldale, two wild cats wander in the garden and Helen begins to feed them. She is optimistic about adopting them but, James warned her that they will never come in from the wild.

The week leading up to the Darrowby Show proves to be difficult for James. Presented with an offer he can't refuse, he has been invited t judge the dog section. Since Mrs. Pumphery will inevitably enter Tricky Woo into the competition, James expects to be put in an embarassing situation.

Trying to save the life of a badly-injured, much-loved cat, James and Tristan seek the help of Granville Bennett, who runs a small animal hospital. It is obvious to James that Bennett's practice is very successful and he is intrigued that Bennett is looking for a partner.

Andrew Bruce, an old school friend of James' comes to stay for a long weekend. Andrew, a city bank manager, is rhapsodic about the idyllic countryside and Yorkshire Dales hospitality, and he cannot understand why James would want to change such an idyllic lifestyle until he finds himself in a rural nightmare.

Harvest Sunday proves to be a trying time for the practice. Seigfreid sizes the opportunity to teach Callum cleanliness by example, forcing him to watch his "perfect operation" on a sick cow. Unfortunately, the operation doesn't go as planned - Callum is chased by a bull and James must go to his aid.
