Carlo and Silvia have been together for years. Their loving relationship is a "non-exclusive" one and Carlo, staying at their country house while writing a book, has taken a much younger lover, Lou. When he returns to Rome, he finds that Silvia has embarked on an affair with a violent young thug. The spell has been broken and their love seems to be spiralling towards a tragic ending, that only Carlo can prevent.
