Exploring Europe's Great Food Markets

Food markets have a strong tradition in the Netherlands and many citizens count on their long street markets for their fresh food supplies. One of the oldest and most famous markets of the Netherlands is the Albert Cuyp Markt, a street market stretching along the upcoming (and "hip") neighborhood of de Pijp.

Arriving by boat to the Baltic Sea Harbor of Helsinki, it is the first building you see. Behind it, the square and the great dome of the city hall. The Old Market Hall (Wanha VanhaKauppahall) is a beautiful little 19th-century brick building with hi-varnish wooden stalls.

"Mercado da Ribeira", in the Santos Area nearby Cais do Sodré train station, has been open since the 1800s and is the city's oldest marketplace. Here you can find all sorts of dairy products, fresh fish, vegetables, and fruits. It was refurbished in 2014 and it is now possible to eat gourmet signature meals there from the most quintessential chefs in Portugal.

The Viktualienmarkt developed from an original farmers' market to a popular market for gourmets. The market also hosts a number of traditional and folkloric events. But the center of the social life of the city is the world-famous Biergarten - here the seven historical breweries of the city pour the finest beers of the world.

Placed in the middle of Palermo's ancient streets, it is almost difficult to walk. All around there is a swarm of colors and perfumes. There is everything the Mediterranean island, so rich in agricultural traditions, has to offer. Street food here is a must, including dozens of roasted, salted, pickled, and fried specialties one can count on.
