The Ark of the Covenant: History and Legend

The Ark was the most revered object of Judaism; it was the place where God's presence was felt. It led the Israelites in their wanderings, brought them victory in battle, came to be housed in the Holy of Holies. Its whereabouts are well attested in the Bible for six centuries. Then it is simply spoken of no more, no word of its fate. But legends as to the fate of the Ark grew out of this silence.
