The Ancient Baths of the City of Rome

The Ancient Baths of the City of Rome

A census of 400 AD listed 11 thermae (public imperial bath complexes) in the city of Rome. Some were noted as "wonders" of the city, some had been in operation for over 300 years. The ruins of the Baths of Caracalla and the Baths of Diocletian still inspire awe; the remains of others are gone without a trace. This is a story of the construction and destruction of the thermae of the city of Rome.
