The Spanish Tragedie, written by Thomas Kyd in the late 1500s, was popular and influential in its time, and established the Elizbethan 'Revenge Play' or 'Revenge Tragedy' genre. The Spanish Tragedy was referred to (or parodied) by Shakespeare, Jonson, Marlowe, etc. The Baron's Men performed The Spanish Tragedie at The Curtain Theater in Austin, TX in 2013, with period costumes and effects.
