During the reign of the Tang Dynasty Emperor Gao Zhong, in Seventh-century China, rumors of political skullduggery are rife. Some – including a charismatic cult leader – believe that one of the Emperor’s wives is hatching a plot that will see the ruling monarchs deposed and a new Empress appointed. The Emperor has this cult leader thrown in prison.
