Mapp & Lucia

Tilling is atwitter with speculation about Georgie's mysterious illness. Lucia uncovers his secret and helps him escape his confined house. After Lucia invests in a gold mine, newlyweds Miss Mapp and Major Benjy also invest in the venture. When Lucia decides to sell her shares, Mapp and the Major take the opposite tack. The stakes rise when Mapp and Lucia vie for the same seat on the town council.

As rumors fly about her impending motherhood, Mapp watches her finances spiral downward. To exploit Mapp's vulnerability, Lucia offers to exchange her house on the marshes for her rival's more elegant house in town. Her subsequent housewarming party proves problematic for Mapp.

Lucia embarks on a program of charitable spending in Tilling and is rewarded by invitations to join committees for the church, hospital, and sports club. But her good fortune ends when a flood brings unexpected houseguests. Soon after the waters subside, Lucia and Georgie cook up another scheme to gain the spotlight in Tilling.

Lucia has joined the Tilling Council and is thrilled when she learns that she is to be invited to become Mayor. Georgie, now her husband, is thrilled at the idea but dismayed when Lucia decides that they must set an example and live quietly and frugally as befits their new status. Georgie sees other glimpses of a bleak future as Lucia makes more decisions about their future conduct and behaviour.

Lucia's considerable energies are consumed by her efforts to help the grieving Mrs. Wyse whose canary has died. Miss Mapp is thrilled when a portrait of her appears in the papers as 'Picture of the Year' at a Royal Academy Exhibition. Meanwhile, nobody believes that the Duchess of Sheffield is coming to stay at Mallards.
