When Laura's dog dies, her Pa gives her a new dog, Bandit, after it follows him home. But, feeling guilty for having neglected Jack earlier, Laura doesn't want him. When Laura later visits Aunt Kezia, a lonely woman, she realizes she loves Bandit.

Charles and Mary have travelled the many, long miles to Chicago where Charles is attending a farmers' convention. Mary is there to surprise her one-time love, John Edwards, but is surprised and heart-broken to find that John has a new girlfriend.

Laura and Mary convince Ellen's mom to let her come and swim with them. While they are swimming, a couple of boys come to get a "better look." When the girls realize the boys are there, they duck under the water...but Ellen never resurfaces.

Charles must take a delivery to Mankato and is unable to finish the addition to his house. Caroline, meanwhile, hires a handsome man to finish the work, leading Mary, and many Walnut Grove residents, to believe that Caroline is having an affair.

Charles and Caroline go away and leave Mary in charge. Laura and Andy find some baby wolves and set up a pen for them in the barn…but with the pups comes danger when the barn becomes suddenly surrounded by several wild dogs.

Things are being stolen in Walnut Grove and Laura, Andy, Nellie and Willie are determined to find out who it is, so they form a detective agency. Although their first attempt to nab the thief backfires, the kids devise fool-proof plan.

When a farmer takes a fall and dies under Doc Baker's care, he is shaken and decides he can no longer continue as the town doctor. However, the new doctor turns out to be mean spirited and has no interest in treating his patients with expert care.

Two businessmen arrive in Walnut Grove and maintain a low profile. Mary has been hired by the men to be an errand girl. Eventually, the people of Walnut Grove discover that the two businessmen are actually Jesse James and his brother, Frank.

Jonathan Garvey is a prideful man, too prideful, actually. After his barn burns to the ground with the crops inside, his wife, Alice, takes a job at the post office to help make ends meet which makes Jonathan resentful towards her.

An aging prize fighter (Moses Gunn) arrives in Walnut Grove and challenges anyone to a cash prize fight. Jonathan Garvey accepts the offer, but he injures his hand while training. Garvey convinces Charles to fight the old boxer on his behalf.

While at the fair, Mary is excited to see a boy named Patrick who she has taken a liking to. However, Mary soon becomes interested in Patrick's employer, Cass, who is charming and operates the hot-air balloon ride at the fair

Nellie Oleson and a new boy in town, Luke Simms, develop feelings for one another. Nellie's mother does not approve of Luke due to him not wearing shoes and always wearing overalls. The two lovebirds decide to throw caution to the wind and elope.

The Chief of a Native American tribe comes to Walnut Grove in search of a doctor to treat his ill father. Doc Baker agrees to treat him, but they must keep things secret because the townsfolk have lost loved ones to prior Indian attacks.

Charles must try to save his business from a competitor. Laura, who is love with Jimmy Hill, must compete with somebody else for his affection. She soon learns she just needs to be herself and the right boy will eventually notice her.

Mary earns a two-month teaching job in a small town but is soon at odds with a woman named Miss Peel, a dominant figure in the town who is against the school, and Mary, for secret reasons. Mary eventually learns Miss Peel's secret - she can't read.

Charles Ingalls is on the road and greatly delayed when a wheel breaks on his wagon in the pouring rain. This is the day of Charles and Caroline's wedding anniversary. Everything has been prepared and set up for this very special day.

When Laura is playing along a creek, she finds a bottle with a note in it. The note reads, "Be my friend." Laura convinces Pa to help her look for the sender. They end up finding a baby whom Laura names Grace. The baby belongs to teen parents.

Charles is visited by a lawyer who informs him of the passing of his wealthy Uncle who has left Charles an inheritance. The Ingalls begin to spend the anticipated inheritance at the Oleson's store, on credit, and run up a rather large bill.

When the 12-year old nephew of Nels Oleson comes to live with him at Walnut Grove after being expelled from private school for stealing, Nels enlists the help of Charles Ingalls in hopes hard work and tough love will help the boy grow up.

Caroline has been suffering from dizziness, Charles insists on visiting Doc Baker. Doc Baker's diagnosis, that Caroline is with child, results in laughter and tears of joy within the Ingalls household: Caroline wonders, will it finally be a boy?

Mary's (Melissa Sue Anderson) dream of being a teacher are severely placed in doubt when her failing eyesight reveals she has a degenerative eye disease that will leave her completely blind in just a few more weeks. (Part 1 of 2).

Mary (Melissa Sue Anderson) is now blind and finding it very hard to adjust to her new life. To keep her from growing more and more despondent, Charles brings her to a school for the blind in Iowa where she eventually learns Braille. (Part 2 of 2).
