An astrologer tells a dying man that he will attain peace if his wife commits sati on his burning pyre. His family manages to bypass the anti-sati law and convinces a poor Brahmin to marry off his daughter Yashobati to the old man so she can be sacrificed, instead. But a drunkard man living on the cremation ground decides to take a stand against this cruelty.
