Adapted from a Guy de Maupassant novel, Stéphane Brizé’s “A Woman’s Life” explores the restrictive social dictates and moral codes of marriage and family in 19th century Normandy. Upon finishing her schooling in a convent, a young aristocrat marries a local Viscount, who soon reveals himself to be a miserly and unfaithful husband.
