The film is one of Valerio Zurlini's masterpieces. In 1942, disheartened by starvation and disease in Athens, the Italian Army Lieutenant Martino requests a posting elsewhere. He finds himself, along with Sergeant Castagnoli, in charge of a lorry, containing twelve prostitutes. He has to deliver them north to various military establishments.
