Pierre Leduc is a man whose expectations have hit rock bottom. In is late 30s he teaches Eastern European literature in a Quebec University. He is roused by a call for help from his father, suffering from a terminal cancer. He wants to leave Pierre his fortune, amassed dishonestly in real estate. Pierre refuses the money, because he doesn't want any part of the ill-gotten gains.
