A man is found murdered, and the only lead is a woman who pawned his missing watch. She claims her boyfriend gave it to her, having won it from the murdered man in a card game. When the woman refuses to divulge any more, Officer Casey poses as a night club singer and moves into her seeding rooming house in an attempt to befriend her and uncover more information.

Casey agrees to help Mrs. Foley find her husband who has quit his job and left his family to pursue painting. Mrs. Foley's daughter, Bobby, gives Casey a big lead when she recognizes one of her father's paintings in a restaurant and follows the owner back to where her father is. Casey gets her father to talk to Bobby and explain why he left.
