Battle For Cassino

The Battle For Monte Cassino marked one of the longest and bloodiest engagements of the Italian campaign during World War II. For 9 months, the Allies struggled to take the Gustav Line and the abbey of Monte Cassino. In May 1944, the Gustav Line finally collapsed, with the Second Polish Corps succeeding in capturing the abbey. The Allies had paid a big price, but now the road to Rome was open.
