Stanford defeated Rhode Island by a score of 79-77. Rhode Island was eighth-seeded, but they were on a roll, having earlier defeated top-seeded Kansas. The Rams were coached by Jim Harrick, and the Cardinal was coached by Mike Montgomery. Stanford was seeded third, and they went on to lose to Kentucky in the Final Four round of the tournament.
