The Merchant of Venice is not about Antonio, the titular merchant. Nor is it about Shylock, one of Shakespeare's most famous characters. No, this is the story of Portia, a young noblewoman who cannot wed the man of her choosing. The film was adapted from a stage play at Cambridge University's Amateur Dramatic Club with student actors. A great study tool.
