Sarah Bailey has recently split up with her husband Ben and is reconnecting with her past, and trying to remain a good mother to her children Amber and Eamon. When Amber goes inexplicably missing she reverts back to old patterns as Ben once again becomes the family leader.

Maeve Flynn Dunne is a former gossip columnist and a jaded socialite who has recently profited from her friendship with Sarah Bailey. Maeve is constantly broke, partly because of her lifestyle and partly because work has dried up for her.

Charlie Huang is a Chinese national who has been living in Ireland without a visa for several years. He is in a loving relationship with an Irish girl and supports her and her young daughter. Charlie works in a second-hand electronic store in Dublin's city centre that isn't averse to accepting stolen goods from local thieves.

Months have now passed since Amber Bailey disappeared. The Bailey Family has been through more emotional turmoil and public scrutiny than most people could bear. Amber's father Ben Bailey has reached the ugliest point of his emotions and actions and hit rock bottom.
