An Unknown Enemy

Four months have passed since the tragic blow to his family, and Fernando Barrientos, the new Vice Secretary of Interior, tries to find the responsible parties while struggling to carry out his duties. Meanwhile, the new president, Luis Echeverría, takes advantage of the students' unrest to carry out a historic coup to get rid of his political enemies.

His six-year term is halfway through, and Fernando Barrientos has gotten over his pain and is strengthening his position in the cabinet. But an unexpected event will force him to question his future and trajectory on the road to power. Meanwhile, as a result of state repression, the September 23 Communist League, a guerrilla group that seriously threatens national security, emerges.

The guerrilla launches its first offensive and Barrientos seeks to manipulate this new enemy in his favor. But the violence gets out of control and President Echeverría summons the army to fight the guerrilla. Barrientos will have to defend his place in the cabinet while facing General Federico Amaya, an old and powerful enemy who will seek to override him no matter what it takes.

The fight between Barrientos and General Amaya to dismantle the Communist League turns into an implacable personal war. However, the guerrillas do not give up and make a desperate decision. The cruelty of the persecution leads to a violent ending that will force Barrientos to explore an alternative route to continue his quest for power.

Allied with the CIA, Barrientos sets the foundation for the new and lucrative Mexican parastatal business: the narco-state. Meanwhile, Lucio Cabañas and his guerrilla cause a stir in Guerrero, putting Barrientos and his allies' plans in check. When General Amaya, who closely follows Cabañas en la sierra, discovers Barrientos' intentions, he will do everything to take the business away from him.

It is the final stretch of the six-year term and the race for the presidential succession begins amid the threat of a historic economic crisis. Barrientos seems to be on the right side but Echeverría's agenda nullifies any chance for him. Barrientos will do whatever it takes to neutralize Echeverría and show that nothing will stop his ambition to become the most powerful man in the country.
