The Best Of The Carol Burnett Show

Big laughs begin once Tim Conway joins Carol in the audience question-and-answer session. In the The Night They Raided Rimsky's finale, Tim plays the bumbling magician Flippo and a gullible stooge who forks over his money to flimflam man Harvey.

Andy Griffith opens the show with Aesop's fable of the lion and the mouse, and narrates Cinderellie, the backwoods version of Cinderella that closes the evening. And in "Carol & Sis," Carol's recreation of a football instant replay is slo-mo magic!

If the race is on the line, who you gonna call? Not the world's "Oldest Man" (Tim Conway), a pit crew disaster operating at glacial speed. Martha Raye is a beer-swilling scammer, and a classic crack-up by Tim as "Charlie Chan."

Vikki Carr and Vicki Lawrence stand out in this episode. The cast and guest stars lampoon the acclaimed, must-see CBS program Mission: Impossible. Flip Wilson steals the show and solves the case. "Yeah, you did it, honey!" The devil made her do it.

When crazy redheads Carol and Lucille Ball work together, watch out. They play competitive stage mothers and travel back to the Roaring Twenties in Some Like It Hotsy Totsy. Carol and Mel Tormé perform a medley of Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire hits.

Carol plays the hostes of Dinah's Den. Pixie Peters (Vicki) plays a rising Hollywood bimbo, while Totie Fields is a published authority on what makes women desirable. Golfing buddies Rabbi Feldman (Harvey) and Father Colucci (Ken) drop by.

"George and Zelda" are at it again, and George's reverie transports him to the Old West. He's a marshal preparing for a shootout with Black Bart. The show's mock movie salute, Love in an Avalanche, stars Carol as figure skater Sonja Honay.

"Carol and Sis" finds Roger (Harvey) directing a community theater production of A Streetcar Named Desire, and his two leads stink. Tim plays a rookie dentist with his first patient, Harvey, in the all-time classic, "The Dentist."

The spoof's the thing in this episode. Carol and Harvey reconnect while waiting to participate in "Let's Make a Bargain," "Terminal Hospital" is filled with loonies, and The Plot to Hurt Hitler goes awry.

Season 9 opens with a couple of significant firsts. This episode marks Tim Conway's debut as a regular cast member, and the ninth consecutive year that Jim Nabors appeared in the first show of the season as the sole guest star.

It ranks as one of the greatest sight gags in television history: "Starlet O'Hara" appears at the top of her grand staircase in a dress made from curtains-rod included. She purrs to "Rat Butler," "I saw it in the window and I just couldn't resist."

Arnold and Wendy (Steve Lawrence and Carol) are jetting to Hawaii for their tenth wedding anniversary, but the engines malfunction and the landing gear is shaky. Mr. Tudball receives a troubling diagnosis. The old clunker's days are numbered.
