Seymour departs for a new teaching job, leaving Clegg and Compo at a loose end now he is no longer around to drag them into his eccentric schemes. However, they do not realize an old friend is about to return to the village.

The wily trio set about trying to find a new home for Smiler, whose wife has left him after 33 years of marriage and gone to live with her sister in Australia.
