The lives of Detective Inspector Pat North (Kate Buffery) and Detective Superintendent Michael Walker (David Hayman) have never been more intense. At a time when they should be most happy, with Walker's divorce clearing the way for their upcoming wedding, they are thrust into personal and professional chaos. Walker is up for his dream job of Commander, and North is at the peak of her career, heading up her first murder inquiry. Then a nightmare erupts at home, which threatens to destroy them both.

When a mother is snatched from a local wood in full view of her young daughter and friend, Pat North takes charge of the investigation and is amazed when a hulking, swarthy man, Bob Brickman (Ivan Kaye) immediately confesses to abduction, rape and murder. But there is no apparent motive, no body, and only two traumatized children as witnesses.
