Almanzo takes a big risk when he purchases land that must be paid off by a certain date, or the land will revert back to the seller. Meanwhile, Laura accepts a teaching position against Almanzo's wishes, adding to their tension. (Part 1 of 2).

Eliza Jane falls in love with Harve, but she is afraid to tell him of her feelings. When she does, she is devastated to find he loves another. Eliza Jane decides to leave Walnut Grove, but first helps Laura and Almanzo reconcile. (Part 2 of 2).

Jonathan and Andy Garvey move to Sleepy Eye to start a new life after Alice's death. They start a freight business; however, the business is robbed several times and Jonathan is determined to catch the thieves, becoming a deputy sheriff.

A former college football star comes to Walnut Grove and agrees to be the head coach for the local boys' football team. However, it becomes quite evident that the coach is very demanding and too strict with his win at all costs approach.

Two brothers run away from the Sleepy Eye orphanage when they learn the couple who are to adopt them are only willing to adopt the eldest of the two. The boys are taken in by Houston, who tries to convince the couple to adopt both boys.

A blind woman named Annie has a great talent for painting. Her biological mother wants to reunite with her, however, Annie refuses, saying her mother abandoned her to an orphanage because she didn't want to care for her because she was blind.

Laura (Melissa Gilbert)and Almanzo (Dean Butler) start to have tension in their marriage when a friend of Laura, Brenda Sue, begins to show an attraction to Almanzo. Laura goes so far as leaving Almanzo when she suspects he is having an affair.

Albert begins writing more frequently to his pen pal Leslie, which began as a school project. Both Albert and Leslie lie about aspects of themselves to each other. Albert falls in love with Leslie and wants to meet with her. But Leslie has a secret.

Jonathan suggests Almanzo and Mr. Ingalls expand their business by delivering goods to Sleepy Eye, creating the company Ingalls and Wilder. Both of them believe they know the quickest way to get there and place a bet: the loser must cook dinner.

A freak accident has restored Adam's sight, prompting him to want to pursue a career as a lawyer. He studies for the law entrance exam with great enthusiasm, however, Mary is now concerned he will no longer want to be married to a wire who is blind.

Adam goes to Minneapolis to take the law school entrance exam, however, shortly after arriving he is beaten and robbed one night by a group of thieves and left ailing and misses the all-important exam. Thankfully, Mary comes to the rescue.

Elizabeth Smith, a female campaigner for equal rights, comes to Walnut Grove promoting a town referendum on giving fair property rights to married women. Mrs. Ingalls is in favor of it, but her husband strongly opposes it, causing a town-wide split.

Percival's mother and father come to visit with their son and his expectant wife, Nellie. It does not take long for Percival's over-bearing father to butt heads with Nellie's over-bearing mother over the religious faith of the unborn child.

Almanzo's brother Royal leaves his two sons with the Wilders to babysit while Royal and his wife go on a child-free vacation. The two boys are terrors and drive Almanzo and Laura crazy with their unruly behavior and shenanigans.

Joe Kagen befriends a blind boy when performing duties at The Blind School. The boy seems indifferent to most people; however, he and Joe strike up a friendship. Meanwhile, Joe is hoping Hester-Sue will give him a chance as a suitor.

When Laura is challenged by Mrs. Oleson to add certain subjects to the school curriculum, Laura refuses and resigns as teacher. Mrs. Oleson takes the job and adds a dress code among many other changes, causing the students to rebel.

Alberts falls for new student, Sylvia, who is more physically mature than the other kids her age. They try to hide their affection for one another due to Sylvia's father being very strict. Tragically, she is raped in the woods by a masked assailant.

Sylvia's father decides that he and his daughter must leave Walnut Grove due to all of the gossip surrounding his daughter. Not wanting to leave, Sylvia and Albert decide to run away and elope, however, unforeseen danger is coming her way.

Adam and Mary return to Walnut Grove after Adam's chance at joining a law practice in Sleepy Eye falls through. Adam's first case is defending a land swindler who is accused of knowingly selling bad land to good people in Walnut Grove.

Caroline begins to experience signs of early pregnancy until she learns she is actually experiencing menopause. Making matters worse for her, she is informed by Doc Baker she will never be able to bear children again, especially, a son for Charles.

Charles and Albert travel with the Cooper family while on a delivery. A serious accident occurs while the Coopers are going down a steep hill, and the Cooper parents are killed. Charles tries to find the children, Cassandra and James, a new home.

Orphans James and Cassandra go to live with their new family who turn out to be a nightmare - making the children work to exhaustion. The two run away and the adoptive father doesn't even look for them. Charles decides to adopt them full time.
