Rome: A History of the City. Lecture 2 of 6. The Republic. The Kings of the city were overthrown, a Republic established, and, after the near total destruction of Rome by the Gauls in 390 BC, the city began to grow by leaps and bounds. Rome's forum became so congested with buildings, statues, and memorials that Julius Caesar found it necessary to launch a new clearance and rebuilding campaign.
