Ansis earns his living as a sign painter in his Latvian village, a seemingly innocent occupation needed in every regime - from the authoritarian Thirties, followed by Communism, and now the Nazis. When Ansis gets caught up in a love triangle with the Jewish girl Zisla and a Latvian girl, things become explosive after Zisla falls victim to the Nazis' persecutions.
