Laura is a 20-year-old deaf woman who is illiterate and has never been taught sign language. After facing years of neglect and physical abuse from her father, Laura is rescued by Pam Willis, a social worker. With shelters refusing to take in a deaf person, Pam bends the rules and brings Laura to her home, teaching her how to communicate and uncovering her true personality.
