Between May and July, the sardine run along the East coast of South Africa is one of nature’s greatest spectacles. In terms of biomass, researchers estimate this annual gathering of sardines could rival Africa’s wildebeest migration. Prompted by an influx of cold water, billions of these tiny fish start a journey that becomes an epic movable feast for sharks, gannets, seals, dolphins and whales.
