A penniless middle-aged spinster, Judith Hearne (Maggie Smith), manages by giving piano lessons in Dublin during the 1950's. She makes a sad last bid for love when she falls in love with her landlady's brother (Bob Hoskins), a former owner of a hotel in New York.
