Doctor Y Surgeon Hideki Kaji

Lured by a big paycheck, surgeon Hideki Kaji (Masanobu Katsumura), the “wizard of laparoscopy,” accepts work at Honokura Hospital deep in the mountains. On his way there, the locals ask him ominously “Why on a day like this…?” Perplexed, Kaji arrives at the hospital where he is greeted by Nurse Kazuma Nakata (Arata Horii). Soon thereafter, he encounters a series of disturbing occurrences.

Kaji makes Nakata tell him about the hospital’s rumor and learns about an incident that occurred 15 years ago. Since then, people have been witnessing a ghost of a young girl and other uncanny phenomena. Although the story slightly unsettles Kaji, he scoffs at its absurdity. However, when he answers the room phone in the on-call room, he hears the voice of a young girl calling out for help.

“I’m going to get to the bottom of this.” Kaji is freaked out by the supernatural phenomena but decides to find out the truth. He forces Nakata to join him on his late-night patrol of the hospital. He even summons Reiko Shimizu (Marie Iitoyo) and other nurses, and they head to the basement morgue that has been closed off for years. When they open the door, they are shocked by what they see.

In the morgue, they find… not a ghost but Shigeharu Mizuki (Hidetoshi Hoshida), a burglar on the run, and his hostage, a young girl named Sayoko (Kurumi Inagaki). When long-time nurse Kiyoe Kurosawa (Kaoru Noguchi) sees Mizuki’s face, she makes a surprising remark. Mizuki demands to see Seiichi Yokomizo (Ryo Iwamatsu), the director of Honokura Hospital, but Yokomizo flatly refuses.

Kaji and a furious Mizuki get into a scuffle, and after a series of mishaps, Kaji ends up taking Sayoko’s place as the hostage. Then reporter Kayako Yotsuya (Akane Hotta), makes an outrageous statement about the ghost of a little girl. Soon thereafter, Sayoko gets a severe stomachache. Kaji examines her on the spot and sees the need for immediate surgery.

Assisted by Nakata, Reiko, and even Mizuki, Kaji starts an emergency operation on Sayoko. Midway in the surgery, Kaji unexpectedly discovers an inoperable symptom. Undeterred by his panicking assistants, he decides to proceed. He skillfully continues operating on Sayoko, however… Soon, Kaji comes face to face with a situation beyond his wildest imagination, one that makes him scream out in shock.
