Barton is a soldier in WW2 England. He meets Alice (Glenda Jackson) looking after her farm single-handed as her husband is a prisoner of war in Japan. After staying overnight with Alice he decides to dessert and stay with Alice, pretending to be her sister and thus hiding the fact they are lovers.
