Sons of Winter

The Barks have been trapping as a family for years. Now, the two oldest sons are heading off into the wild on their own, splitting up their family for the first time to tackling the wilderness' many obstacles separately.

Dale and Shane face a decision: find heat and eat later or go hunting and risk another frigid night in the wild. Kole struggles with his new role as Randy's right hand. A fallen tree on the Barks' skinning shed raises concerns.

The boys go ice fishing for bait, but it quickly takes a potentially fatal turn. The Barks help their neighbors clear out a beaver dam, bush-style -- with dynamite.

The family struggles to get home for Kole's birthday party. Kole gets lost in the bog while checking a trapline and risks having to spend the night in the cold. Dale and Shane fruitlessly hunt for food and have snowmobile trouble.

Dale has the flu, and wolves take off with the meat Dale and Shane have stored, forcing Shane to hunt for more on his own in the dead of winter. Back at the Barks' cabin, Randy and Kole work to find a safer way to store meat.

To avoid overtrapping their area, Randy and Kole go north. The boys also explore north of their cabin, but after a snowmobile wreck, they must decide whether to take a four-day walk home or head west in search of Randy and Kole.

An accident with the gas can sends Randy and Kole into civilization to replenish. Dale and Shane see evidence of a wolverine, the highest prize a trapper can get. While hunting they spot a signal flare and try to track its source.

With Dale and Shane nearing the end their 90 days in the wild, Randy begins having second thoughts about calling his sons back home, but health concerns with a family member force the boys to make a painful decision.
