When teenage dirt-bike rider Miles stumbles upon an advanced, doglike combat robot, he teams up with resourceful graffiti artist Sara to protect the mechanized prototype from the dangerous scientists who created it. Endowed with advanced artificial intelligence, the fugitive robot (nicknamed A-X-L) forms an unlikely emotional bond with Miles that changes both of their lives forever.
