Alderney

On June 23rd 1940, 1600 Channel Islanders from Alderney evacuated their island with only 12 hours notice, before the Nazis arrived. Only allowed to take one bag with them and having to euthanise their pets, they found themselves scattered across different parts of the UK. Told in their own words from those alive today.

From July 1940 - May 2045 Alderney was occupied by the Nazis. The only place on British soil with concentration camps and very few to observe what happened. Told by survivors of the concentration camps, through witness statements and the few people who remained on the island with the Germans.

After 5 1/2 years away from their homeland the islanders return to Alderney to discover just what the Nazis had done to their island. With many homes devoid of roofs and furniture stolen to scattered across the island, the homecomers had to either rebuild their lives from scratch or leave the island for good.
