Arthur Birling, a self-satisfied and prosperous businessman who is angling for a knighthood and his socially superior wife are celebrating the engagement of their daughter to the very eligible son of an old titled family. Suddenly a stranger arrives. He introduces himself as Inspector Poole and says he is investigating the case of a young girl who has committed suicide.
