As the body count rises, the progress of the killings seems to correlate with an ominous nursery rhyme, "Ten Little Soldier Boys." Accusations fly, dark secrets are revealed, and the guests' mutual suspicion gives way to a sense of collective doom.

With the guests on Soldier Island continuing to die, one by one, according to the rules of the nursery rhyme "Ten Little Soldier Boys," the surviving guests are in danger of losing their minds.

The number of guests has shrunk to five after yet another murder, and the remaining few have lost nearly all hope of survival. With further acts of terrible violence all but guaranteed, they decide to revel in their final hours. But will help from the mainland arrive at last?

Five of the original ten are left. Tempers fray as night falls and Judge Wargrave explains the reason for his being brought to the island. Next day there is another soldier missing and hysteria and suspicion take hold, relieved by drunken partying.
