Animal 999

Seals are a common sight around Scotland's coasts, however, there's a high mortality rate amongst pups. The Western Isles Inspector, Calum Watt is waiting for the ferry from North Uist to dock at Leverburgh on the island of Lewis and Harris to collect a dazed and confused pup found washed up on a beach.

Red foxes are one of the animals most closely associated with the countryside in Scotland. We'll be visiting the SSPCA's Wildlife Centre in Fishcross to follow the story of a female fox cub along with other cubs being cared for by the staff at the centre.

On a pond in Easterhouse in Glasgow, Senior Inspector Bill Little and animal rescue officers Ashley Griffin and Joanna Boyle are trying to find a baby swan that might have swallowed a fishing hook and line. They need to find the bird quickly since swallowing fishing tackle can be fatal to a swan.

Animal 999 is the series, that goes behind the scenes of The Scottish SPCA. Scotland's leading animal charity is opening its doors to allow access all areas to the work of its inspectors and animal rescue officers who work to protect and care for Scotland's wildlife and domestic pets.

This is St Andrews, best known for its world famous golf courses. There won't be any golf played today as gale force winds rip across the shores and wreak havoc with the birdlife. Guillemots have been blown from the sea onto beaches at St Andrews.

We follow the story of Honey the Lurcher. Honey was found abandoned on a beach in Ayr, she was in a bad way, she obviously hadn't eaten for a long time and was literally skin and bone. Honey was taken to the SSPCA's Animal Rescue and Rehoming Centre at Cardonald to get the care and attention she needed.

In Glasgow's Maryhill area Senior Inspector Billy Linton is hot on the trail of a man was seen kicking a dog outside a shop. An anonymous person has come forward with an address. The owner's at home and he doesn't seem surprised to see Billy, he's been finding it hard keeping the dog (called Tava). Tava's owner hands the dog over to the SSPCA for rehoming.

Scottish SPCA Senior Inspector Calum Watt's had a call about an injured buzzard that was spotted on a hill late the previous night on the Island of Lewis and Harris in the Outer Hebrides . If the buzzard's as badly hurt as Calum fears (it has a suspected broken wing) ... it'll be easy prey for other birds, so it's a race against the clock to find

The Scottish SPCA has been called to a house in Bo'Ness. It's an address they've been to before. Inside, the house is chaotic. John, the owner of eleven cats and kittens, has been accused of not looking after them.

Hedgehogs are nocturnal creature and if they are out and about during the day, it can only spell trouble. Her first callout is to an injured hedgehog in a garden in Whitburn, and it's not looking good for the animal, It's not a great start to her day.

We're back in the Western Isles with Senior Inspector Calum Watt. He's been called to an outlying district of Stornoway, where there's been a call about and injured gannet. It's a young gannet, known on the island as a GuGa. Every year the men of Ness, a settlement in the north of Lewis set out in their boats to catch, kill and process baby gannets.

Meet Sponge. Sponge is a tiny grey seal pup that's been brought into the Scottish SPCA's Wildlife Rescue centre at Fishcross. She is only a couple of days old and still has a bit of her umbilical cord attached. Without help Sponge would have starved to death but at Fischross she'll get a decent chance at a fresh start.
