As Time Goes By

Jean suspects that Lionel is going deaf. But despite the fact that he clearly can't hear very much, Lionel resists going to a doctor. Meanwhile, he becomes convinced that Jean is having problems with her eyes and sets about solving this dilemma.

Jean and Lionel take a parental interest in Harry, Sandy's policeman boyfriend. Yet, the affairs of the younger generation seem to diminish in importance when Jean receives a phone message from an old flame.

When Alistair tells the family that he has finally sold the house next-door, Jean is anxious to learn who the new home owners are. But when the family meets their new neighbors, they soon find themselves wishing Penny and Stephen were living next-door.

When Jean, Lionel, Judy, Sandy, and Alistair travel to the country house for a weekend, they learn of a plan to install a bypass around the village. But when Jean tries to oppose the bypass, she finds herself in an embarrassing situation as road construction can't be avoided.

Penny and Stephen are expected for lunch, but when they arrive there appears to be something unusual going on between the couple. When Sandy announces she will be away from work for a week, Jean volunteers herself to stand in temporarily, much to Judy's dismay.

Jean gets the whole gang, including Lionel's father, Rocky, and his stepmother to help out with her party for the elderly residents of a local retirement home. Lionel is the last to agree and is anxious about the whole idea, especially after being told to watch out for Mrs. Thrupp.

The Duncans abruptly vacate the house next door and Judith has the wonderful idea of her and Alistair taking up residence there. Lionel has his reservations, but they are nothing compared to the reservations Judith has when Alistair proposes marriage for an odd reason.
